HOW PROPER TRAINING AND KETTLEBELLS CHANGED MY LIFE

About 7 years ago I was totally frustrated with my health. For most of my life I religiously followed the rules of the GURUS of Health and Fitness and even have a B.S. degree in Heath and Physical Education. I have a been a Chiropractor for over 27 years. You would suppose that I would at least know how to stay strong and healthy myself, Right? Well I thought so too. But I evidently did not. All I had to do was look in the mirror to see that. (You don’t need a bunch of medical tests to see what looks back at you in the mirror). I had tried it all. Every conceivable combination of cardio, weights, flexibility and diet that you can think of , I tried it . The end result of years of training resulted in my getting so frustrated that I wanted to give up. THE MORE I DID THE STIFFER, WEAKER AND FATTER I GOT !!!! WHAT WAS WRONG? I WAS TRAINING OVER 90 MINUTES A DAY AND GETTING WORSE.

Well just about everything I was doing was wrong! INSANITY is defined as doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. I must admit that in regard to fitness and health I had been insane. This was a rude awakening and not a pleasant thought. I do not remember how I heard about Kettlebells but I know that “WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY, THE TEACHER APPEARS”. And I was ready.

Somehow I heard about a Kettlebell Class in Houston, Tx. So I drove four hours to meet a fantastic Kettlebell Instructor and Team leader, Jay Armstrong, and take his 3 hour Introduction to Kettlebells Class. WHAT AN AWAKENING !!!. FINALLY ! Here was someone almost my age, in the flesh who could move like a kid and was brutally strong and obviously NOT using ANY CHEMICAL ASSISTANCE. Several of the WOMEN he trained who were helping with the class were stronger that some of the men in the class ! I was IMPRESSED. I heard about this certification called the Russian Kettlebell Challenge (now the STRONG FIRST CHALLENGE) and when I listened to the requirements I said to myself , “That’s impossible for someone my age”. BUT Jay Armstrong said “YOU CAN DO IT”. He had more faith in me than I did, that’s for sure. People had been telling me “JOHN you are just getting older “ The next person who tells you that is NOT YOUR FRIEND, Drop a Kettlebell on their foot . SO I MADE A DECISION. AND I SET A GOAL. I would TAKE THE RUSSIAN KETTLEBELL CHALLENGE in TWO YEARS FROM THAT DATE. And so …….. Focusing on just 5 kettlebell exercises I started my journey.

I made it a rule that I would NEVER train longer than 30 minutes 4 days a week. NO more hours wasted in the gym for me.

Here is what I did:

My NUTRITION WAS based on a Paleo type diet. I will say this to anyone who is serious about their health. “ If you are not ready to eat correctly then you are not ready. PERIOD. “ To expect to overcome a bad diet with exercise is as stupid as spending thousands for a high performance car and putting diesel fuel in the gas engine. YET millions of people spend Billions of dollars every year trying to beat this game with some gimmick or pill, potion or lotion.

MY BEGINNING TRAINING SCHEDULE:

MON. & THURS.:

10 minutes Kettlebell Warm-up ( wall squats, halos, pumps) followed by 12 minutes of Kettlebell swing. “I started with a 12 k, 25lb. Kettlebell “ Remember I weighed about 155 and was 64 years old*.

TUESDAY. & FRIDAY:

10 minute Kettlebell warm-up followed by 5 minutes of Turkish Get-ups. I started this using about an 8k (16 lb. ) kettlebell. I followed this with PRACTICING Kettlebell Goblet Squats, Dead Lifts and Clean and Presses for about 10 more minutes.

I focused on my breathing and form.

Slowly but surely my strength and endurance improved .

By the time I was ready for The RKC, I was using the 44lb. Kettlebell for swings and doing Turkish Get-ups with the 53lb. Kettlebell. I was able to snatch the 44 lb. bell over my head 75 times in 5 minutes. My bodyweight went from 155 to 129 and my body fat went from 17% to 5.5%. And I was two years older. AMAZING !

MY CURRENT ROUTINE .. I WILL BE 70 YEARS OLD IN 3 WEEKS.

MONDAY AND THURSDAY;

ROPE CLIMB WITHOUT USING MY LEGS & STATIC ROPE HANGS

5 MINUTES OF SNATCHES FOLLOWED BY 7 MINUTES OF SWINGS USING THE 24K. BELL. (53 lbs.).

Tuesday and Friday:

10 minute warm up using Original Strength;

20 minutes of double Kettlebell variations of presses, push presses, jerks and double squats with pull ups and pistols between sets.

WEDNESDAY & SATURDAYS:

Mainly Original Strength and practice Turkish Getups and Windmills.

I FEEL BETTER NOW THAN WHEN I WAS 20 YEARS OLD.

Anyone can do this!! The principles are the same whether you use Kettlebells or not. You can trust a Strong First Instructor. Google up Strong First and find an instructor. The health and fitness world is full of false promises and misinformation.
